Sri Brahmmapureeswarar Temple - Tiruchchirappalli

Brahmma got the creation rights from Lord Shiva. With a view to give Brahmma equal status, Lord Shiva gave him five heads as He had. Brahmma became proud of this position. Shiva took off one head. Brahmma also lost his creation job. Brhamma sought relief and apologized for his folly.

Lord Shiva advised Brahmma to go to Tirupattur on Earth and worship Him with 12Lingas (Dwadasalingas) and offered relief. As Lord Shiva changed Brahmma’s own bad destiny, he was advised to so in the case of devotees. As Brahmma worshipped Shiva here, the Lord is named Brahmmapureeswarar. Mother Goddess is named Brahmmanayaki or Brahmma Sampath Gouri.

The temple has special shrines for Lord Jupiter, Lord Brahmma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. Lord Vishnu appears in Narasimha form.

People go round the temple on the ‘Guru Brahmma-Guru Vishnu’ mantra principle. This is a rare form in the temple. In the entrance hall, the statue of Sarabeswara quelling the fury of Narasimha is splendidly sculpted. The very stepping into the temple ensures all prosperity to the devotee.

Brahmma appears with turmeric dressing on all Thursdays.

Many years ago, a poor devotee was worshipping Ambica as his Ishta Devatha.  Though he had a desire to build a temple for Ambica, he had no wherewithal to realize his wish.  He wanted to install at least an idol of the Mother for his worship.  Mother Ambica appeared in his dream and said that She is available for him at a  deep spot in the river amid three Athi trees.  Next morning, the devotee spread a web at the site and got the idol.  As Ambica came from a big river-Peraru- She is named Perattru Selvi.  The devotee installed Ambica in a small hut on the banks of the river.
